CRA to Phase Out 3G Mobile Services by December 31, 2025

The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar has issued a directive requiring mobile service providers to phase out third-generation (3G/IMT-2000) telecommunications services by December 31, 2025. The decision follows stakeholder consultations and aligns with CRA’s broader strategy to modernize the telecom sector.

Under the mandate, Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar must cease 3G operations to reallocate radio spectrum for expanding and improving 4G and 5G networks. This move supports CRA’s push to retire outdated technologies, boost service quality, and optimize infrastructure investment.

In addition, CRA has immediately banned the import of mobile phones that support only 2G or 3G networks. Only devices compatible with 4G/VoLTE and approved by CRA will be allowed.

The decision is part of national efforts to enhance digital connectivity, support Qatar National Vision 2030, and advance the Third National Development Strategy 2024–2030, which aims to improve residents’ quality of life and deliver globally competitive services.
