Mauritius Confirms the Discontinuation of 3G Mobile Services

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) has officially confirmed the phased withdrawal of 3G mobile services in Mauritius. Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have already begun decommissioning their 3G networks, with the complete shutdown of 3G services expected by the end of 2028. The initiative is part of the country’s strategy to expand 4G LTE and 5G networks, providing faster, more reliable, and higher-quality mobile services.

The phase-out will have a significant impact on devices that rely solely on 3G connectivity. Once the networks are fully decommissioned, 3G-only mobile phones, vehicle trackers, and M2M/IoT devices will no longer function on Mauritian mobile networks. While most consumers already use 4G or 5G-enabled devices, older products and certain industrial and tracking solutions may be affected.

ICTA has advised businesses and consumers to discontinue the import and use of 3G-only devices and transition to 4G LTE and 5G-compatible products to ensure continued network compatibility. Mobile operators will communicate their individual migration schedules as the transition progresses.

Manufacturers, importers, and distributors supplying products to the Mauritian market should review their product portfolios and ensure that all future devices support 4G LTE or 5G connectivity. Planning this transition in advance will help maintain market access, ensure regulatory compliance, and avoid potential service disruptions as Mauritius completes its 3G network sunset by 2028.
