India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced the Use of Short-Range Automotive Radar System in the 77–81 GHz Band (Exemption from Licensing Requirements) Rules, 2026, effective 11 June 2026. The new rules exempt Short-Range Automotive Radar Systems (SRARS) operating in the 77–81 GHz band from spectrum licensing requirements, aligning India with global regulatory practices.
Under the new framework, eligible automotive radar systems no longer require a wireless licence or radio frequency assignment. However, the exemption is subject to compliance with prescribed technical parameters and operates on a non-interference, non-protection basis. Equipment Type Approval (ETA) remains mandatory, and manufacturers must continue to register their equipment through the DoT portal.
This regulatory update facilitates the deployment of globally standardized 77–81 GHz automotive radar systems used in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA). The change is expected to simplify market access, reduce regulatory burden, and accelerate the adoption of advanced vehicle safety technologies in India.
