| Costa Rica’s Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (SUTEL) has introduced a formal regulatory framework for Standard Power (SP) Wi-Fi devices operating in the 5925–7125 MHz (6 GHz) band using Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) systems. The AFC system helps prevent interference with existing licensed users by determining the appropriate frequencies and power levels that devices can use at a specific location. In June 2026, SUTEL published two resolutions: RCS-137-2026, which establishes the procedure for accrediting expert administrators responsible for AFC databases, and RCS-138-2026, which sets out the application procedure for approving AFC-controlled Standard Power devices. This development provides manufacturers and importers of 6 GHz Wi-Fi equipment with a defined approval pathway in Costa Rica and establishes specific requirements for devices using higher-power 6 GHz operation. |
