India’s DoT Releases Draft Rules for LPI and VLP WAS/RLAN Use in Lower 6 GHz Band

On May 19, 2025, India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) released the “Draft Rules for the Use of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access Systems”, including ‘Radio Local Area Networks (RLANs)’ in the “Lower 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz)”. These rules will take effect upon their publication in the Official Gazette.

Key provisions include:

  • Low Power Indoor (LPI) devices are permitted with a maximum EIRP of 1 watt.
  • Very Low Power (VLP) Outdoor devices are allowed with a maximum EIRP of 25 milliwatts.

The draft aims to regulate efficient use of spectrum for wireless broadband services while ensuring minimal interference.
