The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt has announced the implementation of measures to ban the activation of new mobile phones that do not meet internationally approved technical specifications and standards, particularly those of the Global Association of Mobile Network Operators (GSMA). This will take effect starting February 1. The move is aimed at protecting users’ rights, ensuring safety, and providing high-quality telecommunications services. Non-compliant devices can negatively impact service quality and pose health risks. The NTRA urges users to verify a mobile device’s compliance with international standards before purchase using the “Telefoni” app, which allows users to check a device’s 15-digit identification number. Users should also ensure they receive a tax invoice when buying new devices. Traders and distributors are warned not to sell non-compliant devices, with legal actions to be taken in coordination with the Consumer Protection Authority. The Telecommunications Regulatory Law No. 10 of 2003 prohibits the sale, import, or manufacture of non-compliant telecom equipment without proper authorization. The NTRA has provided multiple channels for citizens to report violations, including call centers, the My NTRA app, and the official website. |
