The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced notable progress in linking Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs) as part of the Federal Government’s 2020 policy. Over 153 million SIMs are now linked, achieving a 96% compliance rate, up from 69.7% in January 2024. As the process moves into its final phase, the NCC aims for 100% compliance to bolster digital security, reduce fraud, and support financial inclusion. The NCC, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has identified cases of individuals holding excessive numbers of SIM cards and is addressing the issue of pre-registered SIMs. All Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are required to complete SIM-NIN linkage by September 14, 2024. Starting September 15, 2024, no SIM in Nigeria should be without a valid NIN. The public is encouraged to resolve any linkage issues before the deadline, using service providers or approved self-service portals. The NCC also warns that buying or selling pre-registered SIMs is illegal and urges reporting such activities to the Commission. The NCC appreciates public cooperation in enhancing Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. For more information,Kindly click here: Official Announcement |
