WLAN use in 6GHz Band

RSM The New Zealand Radio Spectrum Management Authority now made the 5925 – 6425 MHz frequency band available for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) services under the Low Power Indoor (LPI) use and the Very Low Power (VLP) Indoor and Outdoor regimes through the Radiocommunications Regulations (General User Radio License for Short Range Devices) Notice 2022.

RSM also extended the 57 – 66 GHz band to now cover the 57 – 71 GHz band. This is to support a range of technologies including Multi Gigabit Wireless Systems (MGWS) and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) on a shared technology neutral basis.

Summary of technical conditions for 6 GHz WLAN:

Permitted frequency band category Maximum Power (EIRP) Maximum Power Density (EIRP) Conditions
5925-6425 MHz Low Power Indoor (LPI) 24 dBm (250mW) 11dBm/MHz(12.6 mW/MHz) Indoor use only within a building or within an enclosed space having attenuation characteristics at least equivalent to those of a building
Very Low Power (VLP) 14 dBm (25.11mW) 1dBm/MHz(1.26 mW/MHz) No indoor restriction (i.e. Outdoor is permitted)

Open consultation for 6 GHz devices

Due to the increased use of WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) in New Zealand, Radio Spectrum Management (RMS) has opened a public consultation seeking feedback on their preliminary views and proposals for the 5925 MHz – 7125 MHz frequency range.

RSM proposes to authorise the General User Radio Licence (GURL) for Short Range Devices (SRD) to cover low power and very lower power WLAN devices in the range 5925 – 6425 MHz:

Low Power devices operating at 24 dBm for indoor use only

Very Low Power devices operating at 14 dBm for all locations

Comments shall be submitted no later than 5pm on 30th of June 2021 per email to: Radio.Spectrum@mbie.govt.nz with subject line: “Consultation Submission – WLAN use in the 6 GHz band”
