NB Announces Upcoming Changes to ECAS and EQM Certificates

In a recent National Body (NB) meeting, a key decision was made regarding the issuance of ECAS and EQM certificates. It was revealed that certificates containing open model numbers—using an asterisk (* or X) to represent multiple models—will soon be canceled. This practice is no longer allowed, and model numbers listed in Certificates of Conformity (COCs) must now be specific.

While no official deadline has been set for implementing these changes, the NB has assured that further updates will be provided to keep all stakeholders informed on the necessary corrections.

Shutdown of 2G Networks

UAE Telecom Regulatory Authority TDRA announce Shutdown of 2G (GSM) networks. Currently, the TDRA is preparing for switching to the new generation of telecom technologies using. Thus, service providers are planning to stop using the 2G network at the end of 2022. Hence, devices supporting 2G only won’t be sold in the UAE market from June 2022

This step reflects the rapid development of the ICT sector, in which mobile networks play a major role, as the technology lifecycle includes the disappearance of an old technology when a new technology emerges, driving telecom companies to shut down the least effective networks to allow the operation and activation of the most effective ones.

The activation of 2G mobile network (GSM) in the UAE dates back to 1994, and it is still active to date, despite the succession of generations until 5G, of which the UAE was a leading country in its application through a comprehensive strategy and a clear roadmap.
