The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority confirmed its partnership to ease telecommunications device imports and ensure regulatory compliance.

Eng. Bassam Al-Sarhan, Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, held a meeting with the Amman Chamber of Commerce and communications sector representatives to discuss regulatory instructions for obtaining type approval for communications devices and regulating their entry into Jordan. The meeting aimed to gather feedback from the private sector, ensure partnership between public and private sectors, and facilitate the import of communication devices, especially those for e-learning.

The discussion focused on amending instructions to encourage technological development, promote advanced devices, and ensure compliance with international standards. It included proposals to extend the validity of type approvals to two years and allow private use devices to enter without approval. The amendments aim to support research, innovation, and the digital transformation in Jordan.

Attendees appreciated the Commission’s efforts to address the commercial sector’s concerns and incorporate their feedback.

Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Issues Roundtable Recommendations to Boost Collaboration Among Arab Governments and Regulators
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announced the recommendations from the eighth roundtable meeting of Arab governments and regulatory bodies. Hosted last month, the meeting focused on Internet infrastructure and policies in the Middle East, in cooperation with RIPE NCC.

Key recommendations included enhancing regional and international cooperation, unifying efforts within the Arab digital agenda, and expanding training workshops. Emphasis was placed on developing Internet governance policies, creating frameworks to address challenges like cybersecurity and AI, and promoting local content hosting. Participants also highlighted the need for using Internet Protocol IPv6 and encouraged communication through mailing lists to share best practices and reports.

Additionally, a proactive approach to strategic planning was recommended to address future challenges, and the Egyptian delegation was invited to host the ninth roundtable in Cairo.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority received approximately 4,000 complaints in the first half of 2024.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority reported receiving approximately 4,000 complaints about telecommunications and postal services from January to June 2024, with a resolution rate of 92%.

Of these, 2,511 complaints were about Internet services, 1,437 about mobile phone services, 37 about landline phone services, and 22 about postal services. Complaints can be submitted through various channels including a toll-free number (117000), email, social media, and the Authority’s website, which is connected to an automated complaint tracking system.

Jordan Customs Department and Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Announce Launch of "E-commerce and Express Transport Customs Center"

The Jordan Customs Department and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission have announced the creation of the “E-Commerce and Express Transport Customs Center,” located at the Jordan Post Company building. This new center, effective August 15, 2024, will handle customs clearance for postal items and replace the Capital Post Customs Center.

Key benefits include:

Improved Efficiency: The center will streamline customs processes, offering 24/7 service compared to the previous 7-hour daily operation, and expedite the handling of e-commerce and express transport shipments.

Enhanced Services: It will provide significant facilities for citizens, merchants, investors, and express companies, and simplify parcel delivery.

Support for E-Commerce: The center aligns with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision and National E-Commerce Strategy, improving postal sector operations to meet e-commerce needs.

Expanded Capabilities: The new location offers more space for expansion, including additional warehouses and infrastructure, and will introduce a new system for sorting and clearing parcels.

Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Releases Postal Sector Statistics Through End of 2023
According to statistical data released by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and published on its website, the total number of local postal items handled by both private and public postal operators (Jordan Post Company) in 2023 was approximately 38 million. Of this, private postal operators managed about 37 million items, representing a 98% market share, while public postal operators handled around 1 million items, with a 2% market share.

For international parcels, private postal operators processed 1,309,419 parcels in 2023, holding a 68% market share, compared to 610,064 parcels handled by the public postal operator, which had a 32% market share. This brought the total number of international parcels for both operators to 1,919,483.

The data also revealed that by the end of 2023, the Authority had licensed 195 private mail operators—183 local and 12 international—alongside the public mail operator, totaling 196 licensed operators overall.

The postal sector workforce reached 43,362 employees by the end of 2023, including 862 in general mail and 42,500 in private mail. Additionally, the sector had 41,030 delivery vehicles, consisting of 36,029 cars and 5,001 bicycles.
