Regulatory Initiatives Foster 5G Network Deployment

On October 10, 2024, the National Authority for Public Services (ASEP) emphasized its commitment to advancing telecommunications networks, particularly through the deployment of 5G technology in Panama. Zelmar Rodríguez Crespo, ASEP’s general manager, participated in the launch of 5G by Más Móvil Panamá, highlighting the importance of regulatory standards that facilitate the adoption of new technologies.

Rodríguez expressed satisfaction with Panama’s leadership in embracing 5G, which promises faster connections and opportunities for digital transformation, particularly in public services. ASEP has fostered conditions for operators to introduce 5G through pilot tests and modifications to technical regulations, making additional spectrum available in the 2.5 and 3.5 GHz bands.

She noted that the rollout of the 5G network will be gradual, targeting customers with compatible devices in specific areas, and emphasized the need for awareness initiatives by the operators. Rodríguez reiterated ASEP’s commitment to supporting the development of telecommunications networks and ensuring the highest standards of security and quality, collaborating with operators like TIGO and Más Móvil Panamá for the benefit of users.

The National Telecommunications Commission (CONATEL) announces that the Draft Regulatory Resolution titled “Update of the National Frequency Allocation Plan” will be open for Public Consultation from October 10 to 18, 2024. The draft will be available on their website: www.conatel.gob.hn. This consultation is in accordance with Regulatory Resolution NR02/06, published in the Official Gazette La Gaceta on March 23, 2006.

The public is encouraged to review the document and submit their comments to consulta.publica@conatel.gob.hn during the consultation period.

CRA and ITU Launch Qatar's Digital Innovation Profile

The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar, in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), has launched the Digital Innovation Profile (DIP) initiative. This project aims to evaluate Qatar’s digital innovation ecosystem, providing critical insights to shape strategies and national policies that will drive the country’s digital transformation.

The DIP involves a thorough assessment of Qatar’s innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities. It began with stakeholder interviews and will continue with co-creation workshops on August 27-28, 2024. These workshops will identify strengths, address gaps, and develop recommendations to advance Qatar’s digital economy.

Eng. Hussain Abdulla Salatt from CRA highlighted the importance of the DIP in enhancing Qatar’s global ICT competitiveness and aligning with national visions such as Qatar National Vision 2030. The findings from this initiative are expected to guide future policies and help Qatar stay at the forefront of digital innovation.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority received approximately 4,000 complaints in the first half of 2024.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority reported receiving approximately 4,000 complaints about telecommunications and postal services from January to June 2024, with a resolution rate of 92%.

Of these, 2,511 complaints were about Internet services, 1,437 about mobile phone services, 37 about landline phone services, and 22 about postal services. Complaints can be submitted through various channels including a toll-free number (117000), email, social media, and the Authority’s website, which is connected to an automated complaint tracking system.
