CITRA Introduces 5G Advanced Technology to Kuwait’s Telecom Landscape

Kuwait’s Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) has announced the launch of 5G Advanced technology, a major step in enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure and paving the way for future 6G deployment.

CITRA’s Acting Chairman,Sheikh Athbi Jaber Al-Sabah, highlighted that 5G Advanced offers speeds up to 3 Gbps and low latency, marking a significant leap in telecom capabilities. CITRA is also collaborating with telecom providers to foster a supportive regulatory environment, encouraging public and private sector investment in digital development.

With this launch,Kuwait becomes one of the first countries globally to adopt 5G Advanced, strengthening its role as a regional digital leader.

CITRA Revises Type Approval Regulations

Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) of Kuwait released a new regulation on type approval of telecommunications equipment on September 13, 2021

According to this regulation, telecommunications equipment can be imported and put on the market of Kuwait when it meets the following conditions: 

  1. Complies with the relevant regulations and technical standards approved by CITRA and has type approval certificate (when required) 
  2. Meets the following technical requirements:
  • Doesn’t cause harm to the end user, public or working personnel in wired and wireless telecommunications networks
  • Doesn’t generate electromagnetic disturbances exceeding the specified level 
  • Does not emit levels of EM energy that cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) in other neighboring devices
  • The program interface of the equipment should not be ease to access
  • The periphery devices have to meet the following extra requirements: 

    – Mobile terminal devices must have an IMEI number
    – The devices must support function protecting personal data and users’ privacy
    – Devices must enable emergency services

New regulatory authority in Kuwait

Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) in Kuwait will now be responsible for granting Type Approvals, which were previously sub-managed by The Ministry of Communications (MoC); all new applications will be on hold until the new authority internal procedures are in place, and delays are expected for pending applications. No changes to the process are expected, and MoC certificates previously emitted will remain valid until their expiry. Importation may continue with certificates that expire during this period of transition.
