Pakistan CMOs Begin Commercial Deployment of 5G Services

Pakistan has updated its National Frequency Allocation Plan to support the expansion of Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) and align with international standards, impacting both cellular and short-range device manufacturers. Key developments include the commercial launch of 5G services on 19 March 2026, requiring devices to meet local band specifications for PTA approval, the use of the 920–925 MHz band for RFID (which may require hardware adjustments), and the continuation of strict type approval requirements covering SAR, emissions, and frequency stability. These changes are critical for ensuring compliance and shaping product development and market entry strategies.

Pakistan Updates Regulatory Framework for Short Range Devices and Terrestrial IoT (Version 1.4)

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released Version 1.4 of its Regulatory Framework for Short Range Devices (SRDs) and Terrestrial Internet of Things (IoT) equipment. Issued on 18 December 2025, the updated framework took immediate effect and replaces earlier versions governing wireless devices in Pakistan.

The revision introduces updated technical and regulatory requirements for SRD and IoT devices, including revised limits on transmission power, duty cycle, and antenna specifications to improve spectrum efficiency and reduce interference.

Under the framework, all SRD and Terrestrial IoT devices must obtain PTA Type Approval before being imported, marketed, or sold in Pakistan, even if the equipment operates under license-exempt conditions. While individual devices remain license-exempt within the prescribed technical limits, companies providing commercial IoT services must obtain formal authorization from PTA.

Manufacturers and importers must ensure their products comply with the updated technical limits, maintain appropriate documentation and test reports, and secure PTA approval prior to market entry to avoid certification or customs clearance issues.

PTA Pakistan Unveils Revised Framework for Terrestrial IoT and SRD Regulations

Pakistan’s Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released Version 1.4 of its revised regulatory framework for Short Range Devices (SRD) and Terrestrial IoT, effective 18 December 2025. The update sets out revised technical, regulatory, and spectrum management requirements for the operation, deployment, and licensing of SRD and IoT systems in Pakistan.

The framework replaces earlier versions and introduces updated frequency allocations, technical limits, and device registration procedures to improve spectrum efficiency and reduce interference. Key elements include refined power limits, duty cycles, antenna requirements, mandatory PTA Type Approval for all relevant equipment, and clarification that SRD devices may operate licence-exempt, while IoT service providers must obtain appropriate PTA authorization. The revisions also align Pakistan’s SRD and IoT regulations with international standards to support interoperability.
