Turkey BTK Accepts Compliance to the REDy BTK

Bilgi Teknolojileri ve İletişim Kurumu (BTK) in Turkey has formally announced the acceptance of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED).  BTK Type Approval is no longer necessary, assuming the product is compliant to the RED and a Turkish user manual and technical documentation are held locally per the RED requirements.

Sri Lanka TRCSL New Type Approval Regulation

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has issued “Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) Type Approval Rules 2020.”  The major changes and important points of the new regulation are the following:

All products will get approval under the new RTTE Type Approval Rules

All type approval certificates issued prior to December 16, 2020 under and the old rules will expire automatically on June 17, 2021

There are two approval schemes under the RTTE Type Approval Rules:

  • Standard Type Approval – products without prior TRC type approval
  • Simplified Type Approval – products with prior TRC type approval
  • Certificate validity is 4 years
  • Labeling will now be mandatory and labels must be purchased from TRCSL
  • 1-2 sample units are required, and permission to import sample units must be obtained by TRC in advance of shipping 

The following products are exempt:

  • Short range infrared remote control equipment including TV remote controls, garage door opener, etc.
  • RTTE embedded in desktop computers and Laptops that use only short-range radio technologies such as WiFi or Bluetooth
  • Transmitter equipment with output power below 50 mW EIRP
  • RTTE installed in vehicles as part of car navigation units, remote car keys that use short range technologies such as WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.

SRDs Exempt From Type Approval

Kenya’s Communications Authority recently introduced a new regulation on the use of Short Range Devices (SRDs). Accordingly, SRDs operating in the permitted frequency bands are now exempt from Type Approval and may be freely imported and sold in Kenya.

The new exemption includes, among other, SRDs operating at 13.56 MHz, 433-435 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands such as NFC tag / card readers, keyless vehicle entry systems, WiFi devices, etc. SRDs must however comply with the maximum permitted output powers as specified for each band; this currently follows the EU regulations

Reviewing regulations

Kazakhstan are reviewing their current type approval regulations, last month the authority decided that there is no need for the national CoC and only EAC is sufficient to proof the product compliance, this week the authority decided to review its last decision.

All type approval processes in Kazakhstan are now on Hold until a new regulation will be officially announced

Publication of Devices subject to BIS approval

Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) released a list of products that are subject for BIS

The MEITY in India decided on 1 OCT 2020 that BIS approval is required for the following products:
Wireless microphone, Digital Camera, Video Camera, Webcam, Smart Speakers, Dimmers for LED products, Bluetooth Speakers.
Starting 1 APR 2021, such devices will require BIS approval. You may check the official Gazette under the following link.

New Type Approval Requirements

Ghana’s National Communication Authority (NCA) revised its guidelines in May 2015 as follows:

  • * A local company is now required for all type approval applications if the manufacturer does not have a branch in Ghana.
  • * Regarding the publication of the type approved devices on NCA website: “The Authority will maintain on its website a list of approved ECE (hereinafter referred to as” Type Approval Register “) to be accessed by the general public”;
  • * A regularly updated list of testing laboratories recognized by the Authority will be available on the Authority’s website. The Authority can demand re-testing at a laboratory assigned by the Authority on the applicant’s expense,
  • * Approved Terminal Equipment must be labeled, bearing the mark ‘NCA Approved: XXX-XXXXX-XXX’ (Appendix 3 of Guidelines). Electronic marking is acceptable;
  • * NCA shall perform market surveillance to ensure that only type approved ECE is sold in Ghana

Changes to Type Approval Guidelines

Gambian Regulator PURA changed its Type Approval procedures as following:

1) All Gambia Type Approval certificates issued before 10/30/2013 will expire on 12/31/2015.
   Certificates issued after 10/30/2013 will have 2 years validity. 

2) Test reports to the following standards will be recognized:

  • FCC
  • ANSI
  • ETSI
  • ITU
  • IEC
  • ISO

3) PURA reserves the right to request a sample of the product if they have concerns about interference, EMC, health and safety of the product.

NTRA introduces further type approval schemes

In March 2020 , the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) introduced 2 additional certification schemes and further clarified the requirements for each scheme:

The light scheme applies for ISO 17025 accredited manufacturers. Provided the manufacturer does not have an ISO 17025 accreditation, the factory location determines which approval scheme should be applied:
