Communications Authority of Kenya Amends LoA Requirements

The Communications Authority (CA) of Kenya has announced stricter requirements for Letters of Authorization (LoAs) submitted as part of regulatory approval processes. Under the updated rules, all LoAs must now be issued on official manufacturer or client letterhead.

In addition, the authority requires that LoAs include complete and accurate contact details, such as valid phone numbers, email addresses, and the company’s official website. The move is intended to enhance document authenticity, improve traceability, and strengthen compliance across all approval applications handled by the regulator.

Change in Directorate and Strengthened LoA Provisions

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has appointed Charles Kamau Karondo as its new Director General, effective August 2025. This leadership change underscores the Authority’s commitment to strengthening regulatory oversight, governance, and transparency within Kenya’s telecommunications sector.

Updated Letter of Authorization (LoA) Requirements
To address rising instances of document fraud, the CA has introduced stricter requirements for Letters of Authorization (LoA) submitted as part of type approval applications. The updated rules are intended to enhance document authenticity and improve traceability.

Key Requirements:

LoAs must be issued on the manufacturer’s or client’s official letterhead.

The document must include accurate contact details, including valid phone numbers and email addresses.

The company’s official website must be clearly stated on the LoA.

LoA submissions that do not meet these criteria will be rejected without further processing. Stakeholders with compliant documentation are not required to take additional action at this time.

SRDs Exempt From Type Approval

Kenya’s Communications Authority recently introduced a new regulation on the use of Short Range Devices (SRDs). Accordingly, SRDs operating in the permitted frequency bands are now exempt from Type Approval and may be freely imported and sold in Kenya.

The new exemption includes, among other, SRDs operating at 13.56 MHz, 433-435 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands such as NFC tag / card readers, keyless vehicle entry systems, WiFi devices, etc. SRDs must however comply with the maximum permitted output powers as specified for each band; this currently follows the EU regulations
