The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has published Guidelines on the Use of Radiofrequency Spectrum by Short Range Devices.
The updated guidelines include:
28-07-2022
| Frequency Bands | Power/Magnetic Field | Spectrum Access and Mitigation | Relevent Standard | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5925 – 6425 MHz | 23 dBm (200 mW) mean EIRP. Mean EIRP density for inband emissions – 10 dBm/MHz | An adequate spectrum sharing mechanism shall be implemented for channel access and occupation | ATU Recommendation on 6 GHz. | Restricted to Low Power Indoor (LPI) use only Outdoor use (including in road vehicles) is not permitted. |
| 5925 – 6425 MHz | 14 dBm (25 mW) EIRP | Mean EIRP density for inband emissions 1 dBm/MHz. An adequate spectrum sharing mechanism shall be implemented for channel access and occupation. | Very Low Power (VLP) Indoor and outdoor use. Use of drones is prohibited. Very Low Power (VLP) device is a portable device. |

Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has stopped issuing Provisional Type Approval certificates and will now only issue final Type Approval certificates. Previously the applicant received a provisional certificate for 6 month before getting permanent certificate Now the applicant will receive directly the permanent certificate. About the provisional certificate already issued, we shall follow the old process until they are eliminated.

Kenya’s Communications Authority recently introduced a new regulation on the use of Short Range Devices (SRDs). Accordingly, SRDs operating in the permitted frequency bands are now exempt from Type Approval and may be freely imported and sold in Kenya.
The new exemption includes, among other, SRDs operating at 13.56 MHz, 433-435 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands such as NFC tag / card readers, keyless vehicle entry systems, WiFi devices, etc. SRDs must however comply with the maximum permitted output powers as specified for each band; this currently follows the EU regulations
