NTRA granted TE a 15-year license for 5G services; Tests followed.

Telecom Egypt (TE) is set to conduct experimental 5G operations in five key locations to assess service quality, CEO Mohamed Nasr announced. The move follows the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority’s approval of TE’s 15-year license for 5G services, valued at USD 150 million. Nasr expects the financial impact to reflect in TE’s results by the end of 2024. As part of Egypt’s privatization initiative, TE aims to generate USD 5 billion in revenue by offering 35 state-owned companies to strategic investors by June 2024. The 5G trials position TE as a key player in Egypt’s evolving telecommunications landscape.

NTRA approves voice calls via 4G Technology (VoLTE)

National Telecom Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) approved voice calls via 4G Technology (VoLTE). In fact, VoLTE service has not been applied in Egypt’s market before, while this step came in response to the several requests made by operators to obtain NTRA’s approval on launching VoLTE service for their subscribers. It is worth noting that NTRA approved to start launching this service, after the operators had met all the necessary technical and regulatory requirements.

NTRA Additional Requirements for Equipment Registration

The Egyptian authority has new requirements regarding samples. If the device is an (RF) mobile phone / tablet and the applicant is a local Egyptian company then 1 final sample is required from each model.

For all other devices there is no sample required unless requested explicitly from the NTRA.

NTRA issued updated SRD Guidelines

In December 2020, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) issued the Short-range Devices (SRD) Radio Spectrum Guidelines. The guidelines specify rules for the usage of SRD in Egypt while also defining the technical parameters.

This document came into force immediately.

NTRA introduces further type approval schemes

In March 2020 , the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) introduced 2 additional certification schemes and further clarified the requirements for each scheme:

The light scheme applies for ISO 17025 accredited manufacturers. Provided the manufacturer does not have an ISO 17025 accreditation, the factory location determines which approval scheme should be applied:
