India – BIS Extends Licence Validity Under Scheme-II to Up to Five Years
| The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced significant changes to the licence validity and renewal process under Scheme-II of the BIS Conformity Assessment Framework, providing manufacturers with longer licence continuity while maintaining annual compliance requirements. Under the revised provisions, licences to use the Standard Mark under Scheme-II may now be granted for a period of up to five years. Renewals may also be approved for a further period of up to five years, reducing the frequency of renewal activities and supporting more effective long-term compliance planning. Despite the extended validity period, licence holders must continue to fulfill annual compliance obligations. BIS has clarified that the prescribed licence fees must be paid annually in advance by the applicable due date. In addition, manufacturers are required to submit production details within the specified timelines. Failure to pay annual fees or submit production information on time may result in regulatory action, including suspension, deferment, cancellation, or expiry of the licence. Key Highlights:
The update is expected to benefit manufacturers, overseas manufacturers, and Authorised Indian Representatives (AIRs) by providing greater regulatory stability and reducing the administrative burden associated with frequent renewals. Stakeholders are advised to review their current licence status, monitor renewal timelines, and maintain a robust compliance schedule to ensure uninterrupted market access. |
