India’s WPC has introduced new compliance requirements (6 March 2026) to allow operation in the 5925–6425 MHz band under an updated regulatory framework. The update mainly affects wireless devices previously approved without 6 GHz enabled, even if technically capable. Manufacturers can now re-certify these devices to activate the lower 6 GHz band. To comply, manufacturers must cancel existing approvals within 30 days, ensure devices do not operate in the 6 GHz band until re-certified, and obtain a new ETA certificate reflecting the updated frequency support.

The Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing (WPC) under the Department of Telecommunications has issued a notification on 6 March 2026 detailing new compliance requirements for enabling operation in the 5925–6425 MHz frequency band under India’s updated regulatory framework. The update mainly affects wireless devices that previously obtained WPC Equipment Type Approval (ETA) for 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz technologies while their 6 GHz functionality was disabled during certification. Many of these devices are technically capable of operating in the 6 GHz spectrum but were restricted due to earlier regulations. Under the revised framework, manufacturers can now re-certify these devices to enable operation in the lower 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz). To comply with the new requirements, manufacturers must notify WPC within 30 days to cancel previously certified model approvals. Devices that were earlier certified cannot operate in the 6 GHz band until a new ETA certificate is issued. Companies must complete the prescribed re-certification process to obtain updated ETA approval that includes the 5925–6425 MHz frequency band.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) of India has issued a notification on January 20, 2026, introducing the Use of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System, including Radio Local Area Network in Lower 6 GHz Band (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2026. The rules cover the 5925–6425 MHz frequency band and are now officially in effect. Under the new framework, Low Power Indoor (LPI) devices are permitted a maximum equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) of 1 W, while Very Low Power (VLP) outdoor devices are allowed a maximum EIRP of 25 mW. The rules are designed to facilitate the deployment of wireless access systems without the need for individual licensing, provided the devices meet the specified technical parameters. The DoT aims to encourage the use of wireless technologies in both indoor and outdoor environments while maintaining efficient spectrum management and minimizing interference with other services. Manufacturers, service providers, and network operators are advised to ensure that their devices comply with the new requirements to benefit from the licensing exemption. This update aligns India with global trends in the use of the lower 6 GHz band for indoor and low-power wireless connectivity, supporting the expansion of high-speed, low-latency communications across the country.
